Radiation Dose Savings

Radiation dose savings refers to reducing patients’ exposure to ionizing radiation during medical imaging or treatment while preserving diagnostic quality or therapeutic effectiveness. In practice, clinicians and medical physicists optimize acquisition parameters, scan range, shielding, and treatment plans, while technologies such as automatic dose modulation and iterative image reconstruction help maintain useful images with less radiation. These strategies support safer use of computed tomography, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy, particularly for children and patients requiring repeated procedures. Dose optimization can lower cumulative exposure, protect healthy tissue, and improve the balance between clinical benefit and radiation risk in modern medicine.

The cytogenetic dicentric chromosome (DC) assay quantifies exposure to ionizing radiation. The Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identifier and Dose Estimator software accurately and rapidly estimates biological dose from DCs in metaphase cells. It distinguishes monocentric chromosomes and other objects from DCs, and estimates biological radiation dose from the frequency of DCs.

2015

Stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SBRT) involves the precise delivery of high-dose radiation to cancer tumor targets. A novel SBRT platform offers a first-of-its-kind gimbaled radiation accelerator mounted within a pivoting O-ring gantry capable of dynamic image-guided tumor tracking. Here, we describe dynamic tumor tracking for lung targets.
