Surgical Strategy Guidance

Surgical strategy guidance is a structured approach to planning operative care, helping clinicians select and sequence procedures that address a patient’s condition while balancing expected benefits, risks, and individual needs. It integrates the diagnosis, relevant anatomy, available techniques, patient factors, and perioperative considerations into a coherent decision-making process before and during surgery. In medicine, this guidance supports treatment selection, operative preparation, communication among surgical teams, and informed consent. By making clinical reasoning more explicit, it can improve consistency in complex cases, clarify alternatives, and provide a framework for adapting the plan when findings or patient circumstances change.

We describe here the use of a pH-sensitive green fluorescent protein variant, pHluorin, to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of axon guidance receptors trafficking at the cell surface. The pHluorin-tagged receptor is expressed both in cell culture and in vivo, using electroporation of the chick embryo.

This protocol describes a bioprinting methodology using an automated robotic depositing system that incorporates etched topographical guidance cues with the precision deposition of a cell bearing hydrogel bioink. The printed cells are directly delivered to the etched features and are able to sense and orientate with them.

Muscle Grafting as a Surgical Strategy for Restoring Blood Flow to the Mouse Brain After Stroke

Source: Paro, M. R., et.al. A Model for Encephalomyosynangiosis Treatment after Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion-Induced Stroke in Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates a surgical procedure to graft a vascularized muscle onto the brain surface following transient middle cerebral artery occlusion. The graft promotes new blood vessel formation in the ischemic region, enhancing oxygen and nutrient supply. Over time, the integrated muscle supports neuronal survival and aids in...

Oncologically safe left pancreatectomy requires radical resection (R0), Gerota’s (perirenal) fascia resection, and adequate lymph node dissection. This study describes the technical details of laparoscopic radical left pancreatectomy (LRLP), used in the first international multicenter randomized trial comparing minimally invasive with open left pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer, the DIPLOMA trial.

New Variations for Strategy Set-shifting in the Rat

Set-shifting, a form of behavioral flexibility, requires an attentional shift from one stimulus dimension to another. We extended an established rodent set-shifting task1 by requiring attention to different stimuli according to context. The task was combined with specific lesions to identify neuron subtypes underlying a successful shift.
