Eye Globe Fixation

Eye globe fixation is the controlled stabilization and positioning of the eyeball for examination, imaging, dissection, or ophthalmic procedures. It works by securing the globe against movement while preserving its orientation, allowing clinicians and researchers to manipulate ocular tissues with greater precision and reducing distortion caused by rotation or displacement. Proper fixation supports microsurgical access, anatomical assessment, and consistent preparation of ocular specimens for research or teaching. In medicine, this technique contributes to accurate visualization of structures such as the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve, helping improve procedural control and the reproducibility of ophthalmic investigations.

Thorough grossing and standardized sectioning of non-neoplastic globes are important for obtaining high-quality reproducible histopathologic sections. Guidelines for a standardized grossing of adult and fetal non-neoplastic globes are provided herein. Different options for globe sectioning are demonstrated and discussed, including criteria for case-based decision-making.

The paper describes a simplified technique to excise corneal and to eviscerate retinal tissues from the ocular globe of human cadaveric donors. The technique described here will help to excise good quality tissues to be used for transplantation, surgical or research purposes without damaging other tissues of the ocular globe.
