Temporal Trend Analysis

Temporal trend analysis is a method for examining how measurements, events, or health outcomes change over time, helping researchers distinguish persistent patterns from short-term variation. In medicine, it uses longitudinal or time-series data to compare rates across defined intervals and may account for seasonality, population changes, and other sources of temporal variation. Researchers apply it to monitor disease incidence, mortality, treatment outcomes, healthcare utilization, and public health indicators. By identifying increases, declines, or shifts in trajectories, temporal trend analysis supports surveillance, evaluation of interventions, resource planning, and the generation of hypotheses about factors influencing health outcomes.

This protocol describes a procedure to track the evolution of mesial network measures in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients. It is based on the combination of intracranial recordings with a novel numerical technique for data analysis. Specifically, we present a protocol for network analyses of foramen ovale recordings.

To quantify microvascular flow from high speed capillary flow image sequences, we developed STAFF (Spatial Temporal Analysis of Fieldwise Flow) software. Across the full image field and over time, STAFF evaluates flow velocities and generates a sequence of color-coded spatial maps for visualization and tabular output for quantitative analyses.

We present an immunofluorescence imaging-based method for spatial and temporal localization of active ERK in the dissected C. elegans gonad. The protocol described here can be adapted for visualization of any signaling or structural protein in the C. elegans gonad, provided a suitable antibody reagent is available.
