Urethral Diameter

Urethral diameter is the width of the urethral lumen, the channel that carries urine from the bladder out of the body, and it is an important factor in urinary function and urologic assessment. Because flow resistance rises sharply as a tube becomes narrower, changes in urethral caliber can reduce urine flow and increase bladder pressure; smooth-muscle tone, tissue elasticity, and structural narrowing can also influence this relationship. Measuring or evaluating urethral diameter supports the diagnosis and monitoring of urethral strictures, informs catheter selection, and helps interpret imaging and functional tests. Understanding its variation is therefore relevant to clinical examination, treatment planning, and procedural safety.

2023

In the present protocol, a urethral stricture induction was developed in Wistar rats, followed by urethral reconstruction with a buccal mucosa graft. A retrograde urethrogram and laser Doppler assessment were performed, validating urethral reconstruction (after stricture formation) and graft placement.

Nerve-sparing Mid-urethral Obstruction (NeMO) in Female Small Rodents

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC A propeller is a twisted airfoil, where the angle of the chord changes with respect to the location, along the radial station, as shown in Figure 1. Propellers are widely used in aircraft and watercraft propulsion systems thereby necessitating detailed characterizations of propellers to design high performance vehicles. Figure 1. Chord, thickness, and pitch at a radial station. One of...

Design Example: Calculating Safe Diameter for Wind-Exposed Disc

2025

Assessing safety in wind-exposed installations is crucial to preventing potential failures. This example explores the calculation and design adjustments needed to mount a circular disc on a building facade, where wind forces are a primary concern. A 4-meter diameter disc was initially designed as an aesthetic feature facing winds at a velocity of 25 meters per second, with an air density of 1.25 kilograms per cubic meter. Given these conditions, the drag force on the disc was determined using...

Size Matters: Measurement of Capsule Diameter in Cryptococcus neoformans

2018

The polysaccharide capsule is the primary virulence factor in Cryptococcus neoformans, and its size correlates with strain virulence. Capsule diameter measurements are used in phenotypic testing and to gauge therapeutic efficacy. Here a standard method of capsule induction is presented, and two methods of staining and measuring diameter are compared.
