Adult Brain

The adult brain is the mature organ that integrates sensory information, regulates behavior and physiology, and supports cognition, memory, and movement. Its billions of neurons communicate through electrical impulses and neurotransmitters at synapses, while neural circuits adapt through synaptic plasticity in response to experience, learning, and injury. Studying the adult brain helps neuroscientists explain complex functions, characterize changes associated with aging and neurological disease, and evaluate interventions that target brain circuits. Research on adult neural organization also informs the development of treatments for conditions affecting cognition, motor control, mood, and other essential functions.

Here we provide a reproducible method to examine adult neurogenesis using a neurosphere assay derived from the whole brain or from either the telencephalic, tectal or cerebellar regions of the adult zebrafish brain. Additionally, we describe the procedure to manipulate gene expression in zebrafish neurospheres.

2010

This protocol describes three Drosophila preparations: 1) adult brain dissection, 2) adult retina dissection and 3) developing eye disc- brain complexes dissection. Emphasis is laid on special preparation techniques and conditions for live imaging, although all preparations can be used for fixed tissue immunohistochemistry.

Drosophila Adult Brain Dissection: A Method in Fly Neurobiology

2023

This video describes how to dissect and isolate the adult Drosophila brain–a procedure necessary for visualizing the organ, which is otherwise obscured by the cuticle, eye, and tracheal tissue. The example protocol shows a detailed demonstration yielding high-quality preparations that can be used for immunostaining and imaging methods in Drosophila neurobiology.
