Field Epsp Recording

Field EPSP recording is an electrophysiological technique that measures the summed excitatory postsynaptic potentials generated by populations of neurons, providing a readout of synaptic communication in brain tissue. In a typical experiment, stimulation of an afferent pathway activates many presynaptic fibers, while an extracellular electrode detects the resulting voltage change in a downstream region; the response slope or amplitude reflects synaptic strength. Neuroscience researchers use field EPSP recording to assess circuit connectivity, characterize synaptic transmission, and investigate plasticity such as long-term potentiation and depression. The method is especially valuable for studying how neural networks change during learning, development, disease, or exposure to drugs.

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for setting up a brain slice in a submersion chamber to record synaptic activity. The process involves securing the slice on lens paper, maintaining a continuous flow of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) to ensure neuronal viability, and accurately positioning the stimulation and recording electrodes relative to a specific brain region of interest. This setup allows for precise monitoring of baseline synaptic activity and the effects of electrical...

Recording of Local Field Potential from Both Hemispheres of the Mouse Brain

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo recording of local field potential (LFP) from bilateral M2 areas of the mouse brain. An anesthetized mouse is secured and prepared for the procedure. To record LFPs, insert microelectrodes into the target coordinates of the bilateral M2 areas, which are responsible for complex motor movements.

Concurrent Electroencephalographic and Local Field Potential Recordings in an Anesthetized Rat

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for concurrent recordings of co-localized electroencephalography (EEG) and local field potentials (LFPs) in an anesthetized rat. The process involves preparing the rat and attaching stimulating electrodes to its whisker pads. An EEG spider electrode is placed on the rat's skull for surface EEG measurements. At the same time, a multi-channel microelectrode is inserted into a specific brain region through a burr hole in the skull to record neural activity...

Recording of Local Field Potential in Mouse Hippocampal-Entorhinal Cortex Slices

2025

The video demonstrates a procedure to record the local field potential (LFP) in mouse hippocampal-entorhinal cortex slices. Electrical stimulation is provided at the CA3 stratum radiatum of the hippocampus, which causes changes in the postsynaptic potential at the CA1 stratum pyramidale. The combined change in the membrane potential of CA1 neurons, termed the local field potential, is recorded.

Recording CA3-CA1 Synaptic Responses in a Rat Hippocampal Slice

2025

This video demonstrates a method to record CA3-CA1 synaptic responses in a rat hippocampal slice. It outlines the steps involved in placing the stimulating and recording electrodes on the hippocampal slice and measuring the field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP) to assess synaptic response strength.
