Hippocampal Activity

Hippocampal activity is the pattern of electrical and synaptic signaling within the hippocampus, a brain structure essential for forming episodic memories and representing spatial contexts. It arises from coordinated firing among neuronal populations, including place cells, and is organized by network rhythms such as theta and gamma oscillations; experience can strengthen connections through activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. Measuring these signals with electrophysiology, calcium imaging, or functional neuroimaging helps researchers link neural dynamics to learning, navigation, and memory retrieval. This work also clarifies how disrupted hippocampal activity contributes to epilepsy, aging, and neurodegenerative disease, supporting improved models of cognition and potential therapeutic strategies.

We describe an immunohistochemistry protocol to study the profile of hippocampal neuron activation following exposure to a spatial learning task in a mouse model characterized by cognitive deficits of neurodevelopmental origin. This protocol can be applied to both genetic or pharmacological mouse models characterized by cognitive deficits.

Recording Neural Activity of Unfolded Hippocampal Tissue Using Penetrating Microelectrode Array

This video demonstrates the procedure to set up a recording chamber with a penetrating microelectrode array (PMEA) to capture neural signals from an unfolded hippocampus. This method allows us to study the speed and direction of propagation of neural activity within the unfolded hippocampus in vitro.
