Meg Familiarization Session

An MEG familiarization session prepares participants to take part in magnetoencephalography, a noninvasive neuroscience method that measures magnetic fields produced by brain activity. During the session, researchers explain the recording environment, demonstrate the MEG system, review safety and task instructions, and help participants practice remaining comfortable and still while sensors detect neural signals. This preparation can reduce uncertainty, improve participant cooperation, and limit movement-related artifacts during subsequent recordings. Familiarization is therefore an important step in studies of sensory processing, cognition, brain connectivity, and neurological function, supporting more reliable interpretation of MEG data.

The advent of MEG systems sized for young children opens important new opportunities to study brain development. The new system, together with a protocol that aligns experimental requirements with the capacities of children, can be used to study cognitive and language processes in healthy, awake children aged three to six.

The Familiarity Bias

2026

Familiarity bias is a psychological tendency in which investors prefer well-known assets and avoid unfamiliar investments, often to the detriment of their portfolios. This bias arises from an aversion to uncertainty and a fear of negative outcomes associated with lesser-known financial instruments. While investors may believe they are making safer choices, their reluctance to explore a broader range of assets can lead to suboptimal diversification and increased risk exposure.Familiarity bias...

A Familiarization Protocol Facilitates the Participation of Children with ASD in Electrophysiological Research

2017

Electrophysiological research is an important tool for identifying biomarkers of developmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but data collection in these populations remains challenging. This work presents a familiarization protocol to accompany research that includes electroencephalography (EEG) to improve the likelihood of collecting EEG data from children with ASD.
