Motor Threshold Testing

Motor threshold testing is a neurophysiological method that identifies the minimum stimulation intensity needed to activate a targeted motor pathway, providing an individualized measure of cortical excitability. In transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), researchers deliver magnetic pulses over the motor cortex and increase or adjust intensity until electromyography detects motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in a selected muscle; measurements may be taken at rest or during voluntary contraction. Motor threshold testing helps standardize TMS protocols, quantify changes in corticospinal excitability, and assess motor system function. It supports research on learning, plasticity, neurological disorders, and the effects of therapeutic or experimental brain stimulation.

Presented is a concise battery of mouse neonatal motor tests. Using these tests, neonatal motor deficits can be demonstrated in a variety of neonatal motor disorders. By having a standardized set of tests, results from different studies can be compared, allowing for better and accurate reporting between groups.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Rapid Determination of the Thermal Nociceptive Threshold in Diabetic Rats

Here, we describe a rapid reliable and simple procedure to determine the lowest temperature at which rats or mice show nocifensive behavior, i.e. the thermal nociceptive threshold (TNT). This method applies a slowly increasing thermal stimulus allowing precise and reproducible estimation of TNTs with minimum, if any, stress to the animals.

We present a suite of standardized single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) recording protocols, with options for conventional amplitude measurements and threshold-tracking. This program can control three different types of magnetic stimulators and is designed to enable all tests to be performed conveniently by a single operator.
