Neurochemical Measurement

Neurochemical measurement is the quantitative detection of chemical signals in the nervous system, including neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and related metabolites. Researchers measure these substances by sampling extracellular fluid or detecting chemical reactions directly, using methods such as microdialysis, electrochemical sensors, chromatography, and fluorescence-based imaging. Measurements can reveal when and where signaling molecules are released, how their concentrations change, and how they influence neural circuits. In neuroscience, these approaches help connect molecular communication with behavior, disease mechanisms, and responses to drugs, while supporting the development of more precise tools for studying brain function.

Neurochemical Transmission: Sites of Drug Action

2023

Neurochemical transmission, the conduction of electrical impulses between neurons mediated by neurotransmitters, plays a vital role in various physiological processes. Autonomic drugs exert their effects by modulating neurotransmission within the autonomic nervous system. For instance, drugs such as hemicholinium block the precursor uptake necessary for synthesizing acetylcholine, an essential autonomic neurotransmitter. Following synthesis, neurotransmitters are stored in vesicles. Metyrosine...

Physiological, Morphological and Neurochemical Characterization of Neurons Modulated by Movement

2011

A technique is described to quantify the in vivo physiological response of mammalian neurons during movement and correlate the physiology of the neuron with neuronal morphology, neurochemical phenotype and synaptic microcircuitry.

Immunostaining of Biocytin-filled and Processed Sections for Neurochemical Markers

This protocol presents a method for the morphological recovery of neurons patched during electrophysiological recordings using biocytin filling and subsequent immunohistochemical postprocessing. We show that thick biocytin-filled sections that were stained and coverslipped can be restained with a second primary antibody days or months later.

Whole-cell Patch-clamp Recordings from Morphologically- and Neurochemically-identified Hippocampal Interneurons

Cortical networks are controlled by a small, but diverse set of inhibitory interneurons. Functional investigation of interneurons therefore requires targeted recording and rigorous identification. Described here is a combined approach involving whole-cell recordings from single or synaptically-coupled pairs of neurons with intracellular labeling, post-hoc morphological and immunocytochemical analysis.
