Orthotopic Transplantation Host

An orthotopic transplantation host is a recipient organism that receives donor cells, tissue, or an organ at the corresponding anatomical site, preserving the graft’s native location and connections. In neuroscience, surgeons place neural grafts into the matching brain or spinal cord region, where local anatomy, vascular supply, extracellular signals, and host immune responses influence graft survival and integration. These models help researchers assess neuronal replacement, circuit connectivity, functional recovery, and disease progression under physiologically relevant conditions. Orthotopic transplantation is therefore important for studying cell-based therapies and determining whether transplanted neural tissue can establish meaningful connections within damaged nervous systems.

Small bowel transplantation has become an accepted treatment option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Our experimental model of orthotopic small bowel transplantation in rats serves as a reliable tool to address underlying immunologic and inflammatory processes that complicate intestinal transplantation.
