Rat Animal Model

A rat animal model is a living rat used to represent biological processes, diseases, or responses under controlled experimental conditions, making it a widely used bridge between basic research and human health studies. In neuroscience, researchers combine behavioral tasks with methods such as electrophysiological recording, pharmacological manipulation, or targeted lesions to connect neural activity and circuits with learning, movement, sensation, and disease-related behavior. Rat models support investigation of brain development, neurodegeneration, pain, addiction, and neurological injury, while enabling measurement of outcomes across cells, circuits, and whole-animal behavior. Findings can guide hypothesis testing and therapy development, although species differences require careful interpretation.

This is a protocol to mimic Alzheimer's Disease in rats by evaluation of spatial memory impairment, neuronal pathological changes, neuronal amyloid beta protein (Aβ) burden, and neurofibrillary tangles aggregation, induced by the injection of Aβ25-35 combined with aluminum trichloride and recombinant human transforming growth factor-β1.

Use of a Rat Model to Study Ventral Abdominal Hernia Repair

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

Most studies involving the Langendorff apparatus use small animal models due to the increased complexity of systems for larger mammals. We describe a Langendorff system for large animal models that allows for use across a range of species, including humans, and relatively easy data acquisition.

Biomarkers in an Animal Model for Revealing Neural, Hematologic, and Behavioral Correlates of PTSD

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.
