Respiratory Gating

Respiratory gating is a physiological synchronization technique that coordinates data acquisition with a subject’s breathing cycle, helping reduce motion-related artifacts in biomedical measurements. A pressure sensor, respiratory belt, or other monitor records the breathing signal, while imaging or stimulation is triggered during a selected phase, such as end expiration, or data are sorted retrospectively by respiratory position. In neuroscience, this approach improves the reliability of MRI, functional imaging, and other recordings affected by chest motion or respiration-linked physiological changes. By separating respiratory effects from neural signals, respiratory gating supports more accurate studies of brain structure, function, connectivity, and neurovascular responses.

Amplitude-based optimal respiratory gating (ORG) effectively removes respiratory-induced motion blurring from clinical 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) images. Correction of FDG-PET images for these respiratory motion artefacts improves image quality, diagnostic and quantitative accuracy. Removal of respiratory motion artefacts is important for adequate clinical management of patients using PET.

Ligand-Gated Ion Channel Receptor: Gating Mechanism

2023

Ligand-gated ion channels are transmembrane proteins that play a vital role in intercellular communication and functions of the nervous system. They allow the influx of ions across the membrane once the neurotransmitter binds, allowing the subsequent transmission of electrical excitation across the neurons. Other ligand-gated ion channels, like the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor, permit anions like chloride into the cells on the binding of the GABA molecule. Their entry into the cell...

Underflow Gates

Underflow gates are vital for controlling water flow in irrigation canals. The three main types of underflow gates — vertical, radial, and drum gates — serve different purposes while ensuring effective flow management. Vertical gates move up and down, generating a free-flowing water jet; radial gates pivot to regulate the flow; and drum gates rotate for precise adjustments. The flow through these gates is influenced by downstream conditions, resulting in free or drowned outflow.Free and Drowned...
