Tail Suspension Scoring

Tail suspension scoring is a behavioral neuroscience method that quantifies immobility in mice suspended by the tail, providing an operational measure of stress-coping behavior and a model relevant to antidepressant research. During the assay, researchers record or observe the animal’s escape-directed movements and score periods of motionlessness over a defined testing interval, often using manual or video-based analysis. Increased immobility is interpreted as depression-like behavior rather than a direct measure of human depression, while changes after drug treatment can indicate antidepressant-like activity. The method supports preclinical screening and investigation of neural pathways involved in mood regulation, although results require careful control of strain, handling, and experimental conditions.

The tail-suspension test is validated as an experimental procedure to assess antidepressant efficacy of drug treatments in mice. Mice are suspended by their tails for six minutes and escape-related behaviors are assessed. We describe procedures used in conducting the tail suspension test.

This video demonstrates the induction and clinical scoring of an animal model of multiple sclerosis: chronic-relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in DA rats. The disease, induced by immunizing rats with an emulsion containing whole rat spinal cord and complete Freund's adjuvant, presents clinical signs resembling the human disease.

Murine Tail Lymphedema Model: An In Vivo Technique to Generate Sustained Lymphedema in Murine Tail

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...
