Microdilution Technique

The microdilution technique is a laboratory method that tests small volumes of drugs or other compounds across defined concentration ranges, enabling precise and efficient pharmacological analysis. Researchers prepare serial, often twofold, dilutions in microplate wells, add cells, enzymes, or microorganisms, and measure changes in growth, viability, or activity after controlled incubation. These concentration-response data support calculation of values such as minimum inhibitory concentrations and half-maximal inhibitory concentrations, helping characterize potency and efficacy. Microdilution is widely used in antimicrobial susceptibility testing, drug screening, and comparative evaluation of candidate therapies while conserving samples and reagents.

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay to screen antifungal compounds using a broth microdilution assay. Test compounds are serially diluted in a microtiter plate and incubated with a fungal inoculum. Post-incubation, the plate is examined for wells without visible fungal growth to assess the antifungal potential of the test compounds and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).

Measurement Accuracy The ability to repeat an experiment and get the same results, or reproducibility, is essential in scientific research. However, it’s impossible to repeat an experiment if you don’t know how you did it. Thus, scientists keep detailed records of their experiments in lab notebooks. These records include important information like the amount of each material used and descriptions of each step of the procedure. Equipment, like balances and volumetric or graduated glassware, is...
