Critical Strain Onset

Critical strain onset is the deformation threshold at which a material first departs from its initial, typically elastic response and begins to show yielding, instability, damage, or another structural change. As applied stress increases, strain accumulates until local stresses overcome the material’s resistance to molecular rearrangement, defect motion, buckling, or crack formation, depending on the system. Identifying this onset helps researchers characterize mechanical behavior, compare materials, and predict transitions from reversible to irreversible deformation. In physics and engineering, critical-strain measurements support failure analysis, structural design, materials development, and the study of how microscopic processes produce macroscopic changes.

2025

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.

2017

A protocol for stroke onset time estimation in a rat model of stroke exploiting quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) parameters is described. The procedure exploits diffusion MRI for delineation of the acute stroke lesion and quantitative T1 and T2 (qT1 and qT2) relaxation times for timing of stroke.

Critical Region, Critical Values and Significance Level

2023

The critical region, critical value, and significance level are interdependent concepts crucial in hypothesis testing. In hypothesis testing, a sample statistic is converted to a test statistic using z, t, or chi-square distribution. A critical region is an area under the curve in probability distributions demarcated by the critical value. When the test statistic falls in this region, it suggests that the null hypothesis must be rejected. As this region contains all those values of the test...

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...
