Lab Component Introduction

A lab component is the practical part of a psychology course or research program in which learners apply scientific principles through structured investigation. It typically involves forming a testable hypothesis, operationalizing variables, collecting behavioral data under controlled conditions, and analyzing results using quantitative or qualitative methods. By connecting experimental design with direct observation and evidence-based interpretation, lab work helps students understand how psychological knowledge is produced and evaluated. It also develops skills in measurement, research ethics, data analysis, and scientific communication that support studies of cognition, behavior, development, mental health, and human interaction.

Screening for mutants with phenotypic defects is a straightforward method for identifying genes that function in a given biological process. In this article we describe how to culture free living worms (e.g., Pristionchus pacificus) in the laboratory and show two different mutagenesis methods, EMS and TMP/UV.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Glassware is a regular appearance in the professional chemistry laboratory, because it has a relatively low cost, extreme durability, and specific levels of precision. While some labware is being supplemented with plastic or even everyday kitchen materials, glass is still the standard material by which laboratory work is done. While there are few rules about glassware, there are some best practices for...

Measurement Accuracy The ability to repeat an experiment and get the same results, or reproducibility, is essential in scientific research. However, it’s impossible to repeat an experiment if you don’t know how you did it. Thus, scientists keep detailed records of their experiments in lab notebooks. These records include important information like the amount of each material used and descriptions of each step of the procedure. Equipment, like balances and volumetric or graduated glassware, is...

Please adjust quantities as needed. To set up for this lab experiment, wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, chemical splash goggles, and gloves. Obtain enough small plastic bottles with caps for the number of students and label them ‘NaCl’. Use a...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Determining the Density of an EggExpand Density is a measure of how compact a substance or object is, and it is calculated as mass divided by volume. When a dense object is placed in a liquid with a lower density, the object sinks; when the object is less dense than the liquid, it floats. When the densities are the same, the object will be suspended in the liquid. In this experiment, we'll determine the density of an egg by creating a...
