William James

William James (1842–1910) was an American psychologist and philosopher whose work helped establish psychology as a distinct scientific discipline and shaped functionalism, the study of how mental processes support adaptation. He examined consciousness as a continuous stream and argued that thoughts, habits, and emotions should be understood through their roles in guiding behavior; his James-Lange theory proposed that emotional experience follows the perception of bodily changes. His writings encouraged empirical investigation of attention, habit, emotion, and religious experience, influencing cognitive science, clinical psychology, education, and modern debates about consciousness and the relationship between mind and behavior.

Physiological Theories: James-Lange Theory of Emotion

2025

The James-Lange theory of emotion, proposed by William James and Carl Lange in the late 19th century, asserts that emotions are the result of physiological reactions to external stimuli. Contrary to the traditional view, which suggests that emotions directly arise from the perception of stimuli, this theory proposes that emotions occur as a consequence of the body's responses to such stimuli. According to this framework, an emotional experience is a cognitive interpretation of physiological...

Neurodegenerative diseases are associated with dysregulated microglia functions. This article outlines an in vitro assay of phagocytosis of neuroblastoma cells by iPSC-macrophages. Quantitative microscopy readouts are described for both live-cell time-lapse imaging and fixed-cell high-content imaging.

Self-Schemas

In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed. More specifically, self-schemas refer to the mental representations that reflect who...

Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes are vectors for malaria inhabiting India and throughout Asia. This video demonstrates the technique for performing microinjections of this species with transgenes that will confer resistance to the malaria to the mosquito. Much of the methodology demonstrated in this video is applicable to microinjection techniques of other mosquito species.
