Introduction to Biological Bases of Psychology

Biopsychology connects biology and psychology by showing how the body influences behavior and mental processes. It focuses on the nervous system, neurotransmitters, hormones, genetics, and evolutionary ideas. Together, these areas help explain why people think, feel, and act the way they do.

The nervous system is the main foundation of biopsychology. It has two parts: the central nervous system, or CNS, and the peripheral nervous system, or PNS. The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord and acts as the body’s main processing center. The PNS links the CNS to the rest of the body and carries sensory information in and motor commands out.

Different parts of the brain support different tasks. The frontal lobes are important for decision-making and higher thinking. The hippocampus helps form and retrieve memories. The amygdala plays a key role in emotional responses.

Neurons communicate with one another using neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that cross synapses. These chemicals can affect both physical and mental functions. They are involved in mood, fear, pleasure, and anger. Serotonin and dopamine are common examples that help regulate mood and behavior, including in depression and addiction.

Hormones also affect behavior and mood. These chemicals are produced by endocrine glands. Cortisol is involved in the stress response, and oxytocin is linked to bonding and social behavior. Biopsychology also studies genetics by looking at heredity and at how genes interact with the environment. For example, stress can change gene expression and lead to changes in behavior.

An evolutionary view adds another layer to biopsychology. Evolutionary psychology studies how natural selection shaped psychological traits that helped survival and reproduction. It asks how traits that were useful in ancestral environments still appear in human mental processes today.
