Electrospinning of Silk Biomaterials

Silk cocoons can be processed into a soluble material that is useful for making biomaterials. Silk fibers have been used for fabrics and threads for centuries, but turning them into a versatile pre-polymer solution is a newer technique. That solution can then be shaped into materials with controllable mechanical properties.

The process begins with silk worm cocoons. The silk is solubilized, or dissolved, so it can be handled as a liquid-like solution. The video then shows how that silk solution is used in electrospinning to form a fiber mat.

Electrospinning uses an electric force to draw fine fibers from the silk solution. The resulting silk mat is biocompatible, which means it can work well with living tissue. The video also introduces how this material may be used as a structural component in engineered tissue scaffolds.
