Cartilage Compression Testing

Cartilage compression testing is a biomechanical method used to measure how cartilage deforms and bears load, providing insight into tissue structure, function, and health. In a typical test, a cartilage specimen is compressed under controlled displacement or force while researchers record the resulting stress, strain, and time-dependent response; these measurements reflect properties such as stiffness, elasticity, and viscoelasticity. In bioengineering, the technique supports evaluation of native and engineered cartilage, characterization of tissue damage, and assessment of biomaterials or regenerative strategies. Results can help relate mechanical performance to extracellular matrix composition and guide the design of implants and cartilage repair approaches.

Compression Tests on Hardened Concrete

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA There are two distinct stages in a construction project involving concrete. The first stage involves batching, transporting, and casting fresh concrete. At this stage, the material is viscous, and the workability and finishability are the key performance criteria. The second stage occurs when the hydration process begins shortly after the concrete is placed in the form, and the concrete will...
