Absorbance Subtraction

Absorbance subtraction is a spectrophotometric method that removes background or reference absorbance from a sample measurement to isolate the signal produced by the substance of interest. The process typically measures a blank, control, or untreated reference under the same conditions and subtracts its wavelength-specific absorbance from the experimental reading, reducing contributions from solvents, media, plates, or other components. In cancer research, this correction supports more accurate analysis of colorimetric and fluorescence-linked assays, including measurements of cell activity, biomolecular content, and treatment responses. By improving signal interpretation, absorbance subtraction strengthens comparisons between cancer samples and experimental controls.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

Position a human patient with internal carotid stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the internal carotid artery, on the imaging table for digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Insert an angiocatheter into the common carotid artery at the fourth cervical vertebra level. Capture a pre-contrast X-ray image to record background structures like bones and soft tissues using X-ray irradiation. Administer an iodine-based contrast medium into the carotid artery. The contrast medium...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The ambition of experimental psychology is to characterize the mental events that support the human ability to solve problems, perceive the world, and turn thoughts into words and sentences. But people cannot see or feel those mental events; they cannot be weighed, combined in test tubes, or grown in a dish. Wanting to study mental life, nonetheless, Franciscus Donders, a Dutch ophthalmologist in the early 1800s, came up with a...
