Thyroidectomy Procedure

Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes part or all of the thyroid gland, most often to treat thyroid cancer, suspicious nodules, or other thyroid disease. Through a neck incision, surgeons excise the affected tissue and may remove nearby lymph nodes while preserving the parathyroid glands and recurrent laryngeal nerves when possible; laboratory examination of the specimen identifies tumor type, extent, and surgical margins. In cancer research and clinical practice, thyroidectomy provides tissue for molecular and histopathologic analysis, supports disease staging and treatment planning, and helps evaluate outcomes such as recurrence, hormone replacement needs, and responses to additional therapies.

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias.
