Chemical Analysis

Chemical analysis is the systematic study of a substance’s composition, structure, and quantity, providing evidence for identifying materials and understanding their properties. It works by separating, detecting, or measuring chemical components through principles such as selective reactions, mass-to-charge ratios, light absorption, and chromatographic retention. Qualitative analysis determines which substances are present, while quantitative analysis measures their concentrations using calibrated standards and instrument signals. In chemistry, these approaches support pharmaceutical quality control, environmental monitoring, forensic investigations, materials characterization, and biological research, enabling researchers to verify composition, detect contaminants, track reactions, and evaluate whether samples meet defined specifications.

Raman Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ryoichi Ishihara — Delft University of Technology Raman spectroscopy is a technique for analyzing vibrational and other low frequency modes in a system. In chemistry it is used to identify molecules by their Raman fingerprint. In solid-state physics it is used to characterize materials, and more specifically to investigate their crystal structure or crystallinity. Compared to other techniques for investigating the crystal structure (e.g. transmission electron...
