Cardiac Transplantation

Cardiac transplantation is a surgical procedure that replaces a failing heart with a healthy donor heart, offering a treatment option for selected patients with end-stage heart disease. During the operation, surgeons connect the donor organ to the recipient’s major blood vessels, restoring circulation while immunosuppressive medicines reduce T-cell–mediated rejection of the transplanted tissue. Clinical teams monitor graft function, infection, medication effects, and long-term complications through imaging, laboratory tests, and cardiac biopsies when indicated. The procedure can improve survival and quality of life, while ongoing research aims to expand donor availability, refine immune management, and improve outcomes.

This protocol presents a simplified, end-to-side suture anastomosis technique for murine cervical heart transplantation, providing a robust and reproducible model for studying transplant immunology.

Innovative Strategies for Organ Preservation in Heart Transplantation: Uniform Cooling Preservation and Ex-situ Normothermic Perfusion

2025

Donor heart preservation is a major determinant of success in heart transplantation. Technological advances have led to optimizing the conditions of preservation, along with a more accurate assessment of the donor heart before transplantation. We herein describe two innovative technologies currently applied for cardiac preservation: uniform cooling preservation and normothermic ex-situ heart perfusion.

An Immunological Model for Heterotopic Heart and Cardiac Muscle Cell Transplantation in Rats

2020

We describe a model of heterotopic abdominal heart transplantation in rats, implying modifications of current strategies, which lead to a simplified surgical approach. Additionally, we describe a novel rejection model by in-ear injection of vital cardiac muscle cells, allowing further transplant immunological analyses in rats.
