Intermittent Pneumatic Compression

Intermittent pneumatic compression is a noninvasive therapy that uses inflatable sleeves to apply sequential, rhythmic pressure to the limbs, supporting circulation and reducing venous stasis. The device periodically inflates chambers around the leg or arm, typically from distal to proximal regions, which promotes venous return and helps limit fluid accumulation in surrounding tissues. In clinical care, this method is used to help prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients with limited mobility and to manage swelling associated with lymphedema or other circulatory conditions. Its adjustable pressure and automated cycles provide a practical complement to mobility, anticoagulation, and other treatments when appropriate.

This protocol describes a rod-based approach, combining 3D-printing and soft lithography techniques for fabricating the soft gripper devices. This approach eliminates the need for an external air source by incorporating a chamber component and reduces the chance of occlusion during the sealing process, particularly for miniaturized pneumatic channels.

Compression Tests on Hardened Concrete

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA There are two distinct stages in a construction project involving concrete. The first stage involves batching, transporting, and casting fresh concrete. At this stage, the material is viscous, and the workability and finishability are the key performance criteria. The second stage occurs when the hydration process begins shortly after the concrete is placed in the form, and the concrete will...

Herein, we describe the fabrication and operation of a double-layer microfluidic system made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We demonstrate the potential of this device for trapping, directing the coordination pathway of a crystalline molecular material and controlling chemical reactions onto on-chip trapped structures.

Measurement of Compressive Stress-Strain Response at Small-Strains
