Spiral Tube Heat Exchanger

A spiral tube heat exchanger is a compact thermal device that transfers heat between two fluids flowing through separate, coiled passages. As the fluids move through the spiral channels, heat crosses the separating wall, while curved flow paths promote mixing and increase heat transfer within a relatively small footprint; countercurrent operation can further improve temperature efficiency. These exchangers are useful when space, fouling control, or handling of viscous fluids matters, including chemical processing, refrigeration, food production, and energy systems. Their geometry can reduce equipment size and support effective thermal management, making them valuable for both industrial processes and engineered laboratory systems.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Heat exchangers transfer heat from one fluid to another fluid. Multiple classes of heat exchangers exist to fill different needs. Some of the most common types are shell and tube exchangers and plate exchangers1. Shell and tube heat exchangers use a system of tubes through which fluid flows1. One set of tubes contains the liquid to be cooled or heated, while the second...

Label-Free Neutrophil Separation from Tracheal Secretion Using Spiral Microfluidics Channel

2025

This video demonstrates separating neutrophils from tracheal secretions using a microfluidic device with spiral channels. The device achieves efficient separation based on cell size by utilizing varying thicknesses and trapezoidal-shaped channels. The interplay between forces results in large neutrophils accumulating near the inner wall while erythrocytes and mucin aggregates remain near the outer wall, ensuring effective neutrophil separation.

Culturing Murine Spiral Ganglion Neuron Explants on Multielectrode Arrays

2025

This video demonstrates the process for isolating spiral ganglion explants from the inner ear and co-culturing them with the organ of Corti on a multielectrode array. Spiral ganglia are carefully extracted and sectioned into smaller tissue sections or explants. These explants are cultured on the multielectrode array's active area to promote neuronal process outgrowth.

2016

We present a protocol to culture primary murine spiral ganglion neuron explants on multi electrode arrays to study neuronal response profiles and optimize stimulation parameters. Such studies aim to improve the neuron-electrode interface of cochlear implants to benefit hearing in patients as well as the energy consumption of the device.
