Aortic Flow Measurement

Aortic flow measurement is the quantification of blood moving through the aorta, providing key information about cardiac output, ventricular performance, and vascular function. It works by assessing blood velocity and vessel geometry, commonly with Doppler echocardiography, which uses frequency shifts from reflected ultrasound waves, or with phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging, which encodes flow velocity in images. Clinicians and researchers use these measurements to evaluate valve disease, congenital heart conditions, aortic abnormalities, and circulatory changes during treatment or exercise. Accurate flow assessment supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and investigation of cardiovascular physiology.

Measuring Turbulent Flows

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Turbulent flows exhibit very high frequency fluctuations that require instruments with high time-resolution for their appropriate characterization. Hot-wire anemometers have a short enough time-response to fulfill this requirement. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry to characterize a turbulent jet. In this...

2017

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.

Calcification Assay to Measure Calcium Concentration in Aortic Valve Interstitial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates an assay technique for assessing the calcification of the aortic valve interstitial cells in vitro. The assay helps to quantify the calcium concentration using the arsenazo III reagent, a calcium-sensitive dye that reacts with calcium ions to form a purple-colored calcium-arsenazo complex.

Angiogenesis, the sprouting of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is associated with both natural and pathological processes. Here we demonstrate an aortic ring assay that allows angiogenic potentiators and inhibitors to be directly added to aortic rings in culture. Sprouting and neovessel outgrowth can be determined by inspecting the aortic rings over a period of 6-12 days.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...
