Experimental Mouse Model

An experimental mouse model is a laboratory mouse selected or modified to reproduce features of a human disease, biological process, or treatment response, making it a widely used tool in biomedical research. Researchers create these models through genetic engineering, selective breeding, or controlled disease induction, then compare phenotypes, biomarkers, and responses with appropriate controls. In medicine, experimental mouse models help clarify disease mechanisms, evaluate drug efficacy and toxicity, and assess potential therapies before human studies. Their controlled genetics and environment support reproducible experiments, although differences between mouse and human biology require careful interpretation and validation in additional model systems.

Induction of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis in a Mouse Model

2025

In this video, a mouse model of multiple sclerosis is established using experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). The mouse is injected with an emulsion containing a neuronal peptide and an adjuvant, triggering an immune response that activates autoreactive T cells. This is followed by an injection of pertussis toxin (PTX) to increase blood-brain barrier permeability, allowing the autoreactive T-cells to infiltrate the brain. This infiltration initiates a signaling cascade that...

The video demonstrates the induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in a mouse model by injecting a combination of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoproteins and inactivated Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The model enables researchers to study disease mechanisms and test therapeutic interventions.

Introducing Experimental Agents into the Mouse

2023

Many investigations performed in mice (Mus musculus) require the administration of an experimental agent to the animal. For example, it may be of interest to test the efficacy of a specific therapy, to induce a pathologic condition, or to administer anesthesia or palliative care. In order to ensure safe and efficient delivery, it is important to consider a variety of factors prior to the administration of the treatment. This video, which reviews agent administration in the mouse, begins by...

Generation of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates the method of inducing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) by injecting myelin-derived peptides with an adjuvant to activate autoreactive T cells, which migrate to the brain. Pertussis toxin is administered to increase blood-brain barrier permeability, allowing these T cells and other immune cells to enter the brain. These immune cells cause demyelination, leading to impaired nerve transmission and development of EAE.

Chemical-induced Two-stage Skin Carcinogenesis Model: An Experimental In Vivo Mouse Model of Skin Cancer

2023

This video describes the procedure to induce two-stage skin carcinogenesis to study tumor initiation by topical application of chemicals. In the first step, a mutagen, DMBA, is applied onto the skin of a mouse model which initiates tumor formation by causing mutations in the stem cells, followed by the application of a growth stimulator, TPA, which accelerates skin papilloma formation.
