Magnetic Suture Puller

A magnetic suture puller is a surgical device that uses magnetic attraction to guide, retrieve, or tension suture material, helping clinicians manipulate sutures in confined operative spaces. Its mechanism typically couples an external magnet or magnetic tip with a suture-carrying, magnetically responsive element, allowing controlled movement across or through tissue without relying solely on direct instrument access. In medicine, this approach can support tissue approximation, wound closure, and minimally invasive suturing where visibility and working space are limited. By simplifying suture handling, magnetic pullers may improve procedural control, reduce instrument exchanges, and support the development of more efficient surgical techniques.

This video shows how to use a programmable puller to make patch pipettes and sharp electrodes for electrophysiology. The same procedure can be used to make a variety of glass tools, including injection needles.

Q Suture Technique: A Suturing Technique to Reduce Gap Formation and Increase Tensile Strength in Tendon Repair

In this video, we demonstrate suturing techniques — core suture and Q suture — to repair the foot flexor tendon in an ex vivo porcine model. Q sutures enhance the strength of the core suture in tendon repair and decrease gapping at the tendon repair site.

Sutures of the Skull

2025

The human skull is composed of several bones that come together to protect the brain and support the structures of the face. The junctions where these bones meet are called sutures. Sutures are immobile joints between adjacent bones of the skull. The narrow gap between the bones is filled with dense, fibrous connective tissue that unites the bones. The long sutures located between the skull bones are not straight but instead follow irregular, tightly twisting paths. These twisting lines tightly...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Magnetic fields can be generated by moving charges, such as an electrical current. The magnetic field generated by a current can be calculated from the Maxwell equation. In addition, magnetic objects such as bar magnets can also generate magnetic fields due to microscopic dynamics of charges inside the material. Magnetic fields will exert magnetic force on other moving...

Colors and Magnetism

Color in Coordination Complexes When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.
