Von Frey Hair

Von Frey hairs are calibrated monofilaments used to measure sensory thresholds, making them important tools for assessing touch, pain, and mechanical sensitivity in medicine and biomedical research. Each filament applies a known force when pressed against the skin until it bends, allowing clinicians or researchers to record the smallest stimulus that produces a behavioral or verbal response. This method supports the evaluation of peripheral neuropathy, altered sensation, and mechanical allodynia, and it helps characterize sensory changes in disease models. Von Frey testing also provides a standardized outcome for studying nerve injury, monitoring recovery, and evaluating potential analgesic treatments.

The most notable symptom of migraine is severe head pain, and it is hypothesized that this is mediated by sensory neurons innervating the meninges. Here, we present a method to locally apply substances to the dura in a minimally invasive manner while using facial hypersensitivity as an output.
