Mate Choice Trials

Mate choice trials are behavioral experiments that measure how an animal selects among potential mates, providing insight into the sensory and neural processes that shape reproductive decisions. In a typical trial, researchers present defined mating options or cues under controlled conditions and quantify behaviors such as approach, preference, courtship, or mating attempts; these responses can then be related to brain activity, neural circuits, hormones, or sensory signals. In neuroscience, mate choice trials help link social behavior to nervous-system function, reveal how animals integrate competing information, and clarify how environmental conditions or experience influence partner selection and reproductive outcomes.

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

Choosing Mates Evolutionary fitness is largely determined by the ability of an organism to survive and successfully produce offspring. Critical to this process is sexual selection, which plays a large role in the determination of mating pairs, and thus which genes are passed on to the next generation. Often, intense competition for mates within a population places selective pressure on traits related to courtship and copulation. Natural selection that results from these pressures is called...

Mate Choice

2025

Mate choice—the decision about whom to mate with—is a type of natural selection, since animals must reproduce to pass down their genes. Mate choice is also called intersexual selection because the behavior occurs between the sexes. In species with mate choice, one sex (usually, but not always, the female) is “choosy,” selecting a mate from individuals of the opposite sex based on appearance or behavioral characteristics. Often, females will choose “showier” males who have brighter coloration,...
