Light Stimulation Response

Light stimulation response is the change in cellular or neural activity produced when tissue detects or receives light, providing a way to study how nervous systems process sensory information. In neuroscience, light-sensitive molecules such as opsins absorb photons and alter ion flow across cell membranes, changing membrane potential and influencing neuronal firing; controlled illumination can therefore activate or inhibit selected neural populations. Researchers use these responses to investigate sensory circuits, neural connectivity, and brain function, including how specific cell types contribute to behavior. Measuring response timing, strength, and downstream activity also supports the development of optical methods for probing and potentially treating neurological disorders.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

2020

Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants. What Is a Photoreceptor? Plants respond to light using a unique set of light-sensitive proteins called photoreceptors. Photoreceptors contain photopigments, which consist of a protein component bound to a non-protein, light-absorbing pigment called...

A Behavioral Assay to Measure Responsiveness of Zebrafish to Changes in Light Intensities

We developed the Visual-Motor Response to quantitate the motor output of larval zebrafish in response to light increments and decrements. We also examined zebrafish vision mutants, including the no optokinetic response (nrc) mutants, which were thought to be completely blind when tested by another vision assay, the optokinetic reflex.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Modulating Muscle Response in Humans

Source: Kuhn, Y. et al. Intracortical Inhibition Within the Primary Motor Cortex Can Be Modulated by Changing the Focus of Attention. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to modulate motor neuron activity and measure muscle responses via electromyography (EMG). It outlines the steps for locating the motor hotspot, determining stimulation thresholds, and assessing the effects of subthreshold TMS (subTMS) on cortical inhibition.

Source: Holbrook, C., et al. Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation of the Posterior Medial Frontal Cortex to Experimentally Reduce Ideological Threat Responses. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the application of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to modulate responses to ideological threats. Electromyography (EMG) electrodes record motor signals, while a magnetic coil stimulates the primary motor cortex to determine the active motor threshold (aMT). The coil is then repositioned...
