Visual Cortex Excitability

Visual cortex excitability is the responsiveness of neurons in the brain’s visual cortex to incoming sensory signals, shaping how visual information is detected and processed. It reflects the balance between excitatory and inhibitory synaptic activity, which determines how strongly cortical circuits respond to features such as light, contrast, motion, and orientation; neuromodulators and prior experience can further alter this responsiveness. Studying visual cortex excitability helps explain sensory processing, perceptual learning, and experience-dependent plasticity. Measurements using techniques such as electroencephalography, functional imaging, and transcranial magnetic stimulation also support research into visual disorders, brain injury, and therapeutic strategies for modifying cortical function.

Source: Galenchik-Chan, A., et al. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) of the Visual Cortex with Wide-View Retinotopic Stimulation. J. Vis. Exp. (2023). The video demonstrates functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the visual cortex to map activity based on blood oxygenation levels. Structural MRI images are acquired as anatomical references, followed by fMRI scans. Visual stimuli are displayed to activate retinotopic neurons in the visual cortex. The increased energy demand...

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
