Whole Bowel Irrigation

Whole bowel irrigation is a gastrointestinal decontamination method that rapidly clears intestinal contents to limit absorption after selected toxic ingestions. It works by administering large volumes of an iso-osmotic polyethylene glycol–electrolyte solution, usually through a nasogastric tube, which promotes continuous intestinal lavage with minimal net fluid or electrolyte movement until the rectal effluent is clear. In pharmacology and clinical toxicology, this approach may be considered for sustained-release or enteric-coated medications and substances such as iron or lithium when clinically appropriate. Its use requires careful patient selection, monitoring, and assessment of contraindications because complications can include vomiting, aspiration, and abdominal distension.

2012

Small bowel transplantation has become an accepted treatment option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Our experimental model of orthotopic small bowel transplantation in rats serves as a reliable tool to address underlying immunologic and inflammatory processes that complicate intestinal transplantation.

The mouse small bowel transplantation model has been recognized as an important tool to study mechanismes of immune rejection and screen new immunosuppressive drugs. However, this model is limited to use because the techniques involved is an extremely technically challenge. Now we introduce the modified technique.

(2019)This video demonstrates the immunofluorescence staining of small bowel neuroendocrine tumor spheroids. The spheroids are fixed, permeabilized, and blocked and are then incubated with primary and secondary antibodies. A dye is added to stain nuclei before mounting and visualizing them under a fluorescent microscope.

Design Example: Design of an Irrigation Channel

2025

Trapezoidal channels are widely used in irrigation systems due to their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in conveying water. Trapezoidal channels feature a flat bottom and sloping sides, making them stable and easier to construct compared to other shapes. The bottom width and side slope ratio are determined based on the required flow capacity and site conditions. The side slope is kept gentle for unlined channels to prevent soil erosion.Hydraulic parameters in channel design include the flow...

DefinitionIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by recurrent combinations of abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.Pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndromeIts pathophysiology is multifactorial, involving disturbances in motility, sensory processing, microbial balance, barrier integrity, and gut–brain communication. These mechanisms interact to produce symptoms that vary across IBS subtypes.Altered Motility PatternsDisordered...
