Javelin Throw

Javelin throw is an athletic event in which an athlete launches a long, spear-like implement for maximum horizontal distance, making it a clear example of applied physics. During the throw, the athlete converts a run-up into release speed through coordinated leg, torso, and arm motion; after release, the javelin follows projectile motion determined by its velocity, launch angle, height, aerodynamic drag, and lift. Analyzing these factors helps explain why release conditions strongly influence flight distance and stability. The event provides a practical model for studying forces, momentum, energy transfer, rotational motion, and aerodynamics in sports science and biomechanics.

Ostracism: Effects of Being Ignored Over the Internet

2023

Source: Peter Mende-Siedlecki & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Social ostracism is defined as being ignored and excluded in the presence of others. This experience is a pervasive and powerful social phenomenon, observed in both animals and humans, throughout all stages of human development, and across all manner of dyadic relationships, cultures, and social groups and institutions. Some have argued that ostracism serves a social regulatory function, which can enhance group cohesion and...

Simulating Colonization and Extinction on Islands ExpandForm groups of three. One member of the group will simulate colonization by throwing balls into the groups of cups representing the islands. Another will simulate extinction by rolling dice to randomly remove balls from the cups. The third group member will record the data. Take time to familiarize yourself with the four island stations. NOTE: There are two large islands with 12 cups and two small islands with 6 cups. Two of the stations...

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.
