Vacuum System Assembly

Vacuum system assembly is the organized integration of chambers, pumps, valves, seals, tubing, and pressure gauges to create and maintain a controlled low-pressure environment. The system works by removing gas molecules with mechanical or other vacuum pumps while minimizing leaks and outgassing through compatible materials, properly sealed connections, and staged pressure monitoring. In physics, reliable assembly enables experiments involving electron beams, plasma, surface analysis, thin-film deposition, and thermal radiation, where collisions with residual gas could alter measurements or processes. Careful design and testing improve pressure stability, measurement accuracy, equipment protection, and the reproducibility of laboratory results.

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.
