Pregnancy Lactation Mice

Pregnancy and lactation in mice are reproductive states that produce coordinated physiological, hormonal, and behavioral changes, making them important models for studying maternal behavior. During pregnancy, rising reproductive hormones prepare the body and brain for parturition, while lactation depends on mammary development, prolactin-driven milk production, and oxytocin-mediated milk release; these changes also shape nesting, nursing, grooming, and protection of offspring. Behavioral research in pregnant and lactating mice can reveal how neuroendocrine signals influence motivation, stress responses, cognition, and social interactions. These models support studies of maternal care, postpartum health, offspring development, and disorders affecting reproductive or affective behavior.

A simultaneous recording of autonomic activity and detailed maternal behavior of mother mice from pregnancy to lactation was achieved using a telemetry system. This method helps to understand the dynamics of the physiological and behavioral characteristics in mothers from pregnancy to weaning.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.
