Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Scaler

A piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler is a dental instrument that uses high-frequency mechanical vibration to remove calculus and deposits from tooth surfaces, supporting efficient periodontal care. Inside the handpiece, an alternating electrical field causes piezoelectric ceramic elements to expand and contract, converting electrical energy into controlled, primarily linear motion at the working tip; water irrigation cools the tip and helps flush debris. Its behavior depends on vibration amplitude, applied pressure, tip design, and contact with the tooth, making technique important for effective, minimally invasive debridement. The device is widely used in prophylaxis, periodontal therapy, and maintenance procedures.

This methodology allows applying a dental appliance on any specimen at any angle with standardized force and stability. This approach might be extensively used in health sciences to standardize the impacts of dental equipment with hand-holding elements such as micromotors, turbines, and ultrasonic scalers on varied surfaces.

Introduction to Scalers

Many familiar physical quantities can be specified completely by giving a single number and the appropriate unit. For example, "a class period lasts 50 min," or "the gas tank in my car holds 65 L," or "the distance between the two posts is 100 m." A physical quantity that can be specified completely in this manner is called a scalar quantity. The word "scalar" is a synonym for "number." Time, mass, distance, length, volume, temperature, and energy are some examples of scalar quantities. Scalar...

Drug self-administration and ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) are used as behavioral assessments in animal research, but rarely in combination. The purpose of this article is to describe the advantages of recording USVs during drug self-administration procedures to assess affective responses to drug experience.
