Cell Force Measurement

Cell force measurement is the quantitative assessment of mechanical forces generated or experienced by living cells, providing insight into how cells interact with their physical environment. Bioengineering approaches typically detect forces through substrate deformation, probe displacement, or changes in tension, then use calibrated measurements and mechanical models to estimate parameters such as traction, adhesion, and stiffness. These methods help characterize cell migration, contractility, mechanotransduction, and cell-material interactions under controlled conditions. Their applications include designing biomaterials, evaluating tissue mechanics, studying disease-related changes, and developing engineered tissues that better reproduce the mechanical cues of native biological systems.
