Finger Gesture Recognition

Finger gesture recognition is the process of identifying hand or finger movements and translating them into digital commands, offering a natural interface for biomedical devices and assistive technologies. Systems typically capture gestures with cameras, inertial sensors, flex sensors, or surface electromyography, then extract motion or muscle-activity patterns and classify them using signal-processing and machine-learning methods. In bioengineering, this approach supports prosthetic control, rehabilitation monitoring, human-computer interaction, and communication aids for people with motor or speech impairments. Reliable recognition depends on sensor placement, movement variability, user calibration, and real-time performance, making it important for developing intuitive, personalized interfaces.

The paper presents a comprehensive protocol for simultaneously recording hand-electromyography (EMG) and visual finger tracking during natural finger gesturing. The visual data is designed to serve as the ground truth for the development of accurate EMG-based computational models for finger gesture recognition.

Physiological Correlates of Emotion Recognition

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls the activity of the body's internal organs and regulates changes in their activity depending on the current environment. The vagus nerve, which innervates many of the internal organs, is an important part of the system. When our brain senses danger, vagal tone is inhibited, leading to a set of changes in the body designed to make us more prepared to fight or...

Gestures During Infancy and Toddlerhood

2026

Gestures are nonverbal movements of the hands, arms, or face that allow infants and toddlers to communicate emotions, needs, and intentions before speech develops. Gesture use generally appears before spoken language and decreases as vocabulary expands. For example, an 11-month-old may raise their arms to request being picked up, whereas an 18-month-old may say “up.”Types of GesturesChildren mainly use deictic and representational gestures. Deictic gestures emerge around six months and include...
