Near Infrared Absorbance

Near infrared absorbance is the measurement of how strongly a material attenuates near infrared light, providing chemical and structural information without necessarily altering the sample. In this spectral range, molecular bonds absorb specific wavelengths through overtone and combination vibrations, while the recorded spectrum depends on composition, concentration, optical path length, and scattering. In bioengineering, near infrared absorbance supports analysis of biological tissues, fluids, and biomaterials, including noninvasive monitoring and process characterization. Coupled with calibration models and spectroscopic instrumentation, it can provide rapid measurements of changing biochemical conditions and help guide diagnostics, tissue engineering, and biomedical device development.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of infrared (IR) spectroscopy (also known as vibrational spectroscopy) to elucidate the identity of an unknown compound by identifying the functional group(s) present. IR spectra will be obtained on an IR spectrometer using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) sampling technique with a neat sample of the unknown.
