Nonlinear Anisotropic Response

Nonlinear anisotropic response describes behavior in which a material or biological system responds differently along different directions, with the magnitude of that response changing nonproportionally as the applied stimulus changes. In bioengineering, this behavior is often represented with constitutive models that relate stress and strain while accounting for orientation-dependent properties, such as fibers that stiffen, reorient, or bear load differently as deformation increases. Characterizing nonlinear anisotropy helps researchers model soft tissues, porous scaffolds, and engineered biomaterials more realistically, improving predictions of deformation, stability, and mechanical function in applications such as tissue engineering, implant design, and mechanobiology.

2016

We present a protocol to synthesize Janus microhydrogels composed entirely of the same base material, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), with a clearly compartmentalized structure base on the phase separation of a supersaturated NIPAAm monomer solution. The synthesized Janus microhydrogels show unique properties such as anisotropic thermo-responsiveness and organophilic/hydrophilic loading capability.

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Causes of Nonlinearity

2025

Nonlinearity in drug pharmacokinetics is caused by various factors influencing how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Understanding these nonlinear processes is crucial for predicting drug behavior in the body and optimizing drug dosing regimens. Nonlinear drug absorption can occur when the process is rate-limited by solubility, carrier-mediated transport systems, or saturation of the presystemic gut wall or hepatic metabolism. For instance, high doses of riboflavin...
