Strain Trajectories

Strain trajectories are the time-dependent paths followed by local or global strain as a material, tissue, or engineered construct deforms, providing a way to describe mechanical behavior beyond a single endpoint measurement. They are generated by tracking strain components or tensors during sequential loading, unloading, cyclic testing, or recovery, then representing their evolution in time or strain space. In bioengineering, strain trajectories help characterize soft-tissue and biomaterial responses, reveal effects of loading history and rate, and compare normal versus altered mechanics. These measurements support constitutive modeling, device design, tissue engineering, and evaluation of structural performance under physiologically relevant conditions.

Orthogonal Trajectories

2026

Orthogonal trajectories describe the geometric relationship between two families of curves that intersect each other at right angles. One illustrative case involves a family of parabolas that open sideways along the x-axis. These curves share a common shape but differ by a scaling parameter, resulting in a set of curves that all pass through the origin and widen at different rates.Determining Orthogonal TrajectoriesTo identify the orthogonal trajectories for these parabolas, the first step...

We describe a protocol to observe and analyze cell rolling trajectories on asymmetric receptor-patterned substrates. The resulting data are useful for engineering of receptor-patterned substrates for label-free cell separation and analysis.

Measurement of Compressive Stress-Strain Response at Small-Strains

2025

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...
