Tooth Displacement

Tooth displacement is the controlled or unintended movement of a tooth within the alveolar bone, a phenomenon central to orthodontics, dental biomechanics, and bioengineering. Applied forces create pressure and tension in the periodontal ligament, altering local blood flow and signaling pathways that stimulate bone resorption on one side and bone deposition on the other, allowing the tooth to shift. Understanding this coupled mechanical and biological response supports the design of orthodontic appliances, computational models, and tissue-engineering strategies. It also helps researchers optimize force magnitude and direction, improve treatment planning, and assess risks such as root resorption or damage to supporting tissues.

In this study, the use of an in situ loading device coupled with micro-X-ray computed tomography for fibrous joint biomechanics will be discussed. Experimental readouts identifiable with an overall change in joint biomechanics will include: 1) reactionary force vs. displacement, i.e. tooth displacement within the alveolar socket and its reactionary response to loading, 2) three-dimensional (3D) spatial configuration and morphometrics, i.e. geometric relationship of the tooth with the alveolar...

Position and Displacement

The position of an object defines its location relative to a convenient frame of reference at any particular time. A frame of reference is an arbitrary set of axes from which the position and motion of an object are described. Earth is often used as a frame of reference, and we often describe the position of an object as it relates to stationary objects on Earth. For example, a rocket launch could be described in terms of the position of the rocket with respect to Earth as a whole. On the other...

Displacement Current

Ampère's law, in its usual form, does not work in places where the current changes with time and is not steady. Thus, Maxwell suggested including an additional contribution, called the displacement current, Id, to the real conduction current I. where the displacement current is defined to be Here, ε0 is the permittivity of free space, and ΦE is the electric flux. The displacement current is an extra term in Maxwell's equations that is analogous to a real current in Ampère's law. However, it...

Analyzing Tooth Germ and Trigeminal Ganglia Interactions Using a Microfluidic Co-culture System

This video demonstrates the utilization of a microfluidic device to study the interactions between tooth germ pulp and trigeminal ganglia. It showcases the placement of tissues inside the microfluidic device and provides a detailed visualization of trigeminal neurite growth toward the tooth germ through the device's microgrooves. Additionally, it highlights the role of tooth-derived molecular factors in promoting or inhibiting neurite extension into the tooth germ pulp, which is crucial for...
