Fungal Degradation

Fungal degradation is the biological breakdown of organic materials by fungi, an essential process in decomposition, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem function. Fungi grow through branching hyphae that release extracellular enzymes, including laccases, lignin peroxidases, and cellulases, which chemically dismantle complex polymers such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose into smaller compounds that cells can absorb. In biology, studying fungal degradation clarifies how carbon moves through ecosystems and how fungi transform plant litter, wood, and other biomass. These mechanisms also support applications in composting, industrial processing, and bioremediation of pollutants and agricultural wastes.

A Technique to Quantify Fungal Infection in Zebrafish Larvae

2025

This video demonstrates a method to quantify fungal infection in zebrafish larvae. Fungal spores are microinjected into the larval hindbrain ventricle, and the larvae are incubated to allow infection development. Infected larvae are harvested at defined intervals, and infection progress is assessed by enumerating colony-forming units.

Examining Microbial Colony Structures ExpandTo begin, collect your allocated culture plates and then remove the Parafilm and lid from one of them. Place the uncovered plate under a dissecting microscope and then observe the individual communities within each quadrant of the plate. As the colonies are identified, fill out the observed colony properties in the appropriate column in the table. Establishment of Rice Plant Leaf Infection through Fungal Inoculation via Wounding

2025

This video demonstrates the establishment of rice plant leaf infection through wounding inoculation with Magnaporthe grisea mycelium. The fungal spore-derived germ tube penetrates the epidermal layer, resulting in tissue infection and lesions on the leaves. This method aids pathotype screening and improves plant resistance understanding for molecular breeding.

Regulated Protein Degradation

2020

It is vital to regulate the activity of enzymatic as well as non-enzymatic proteins inside the cell. This can be achieved either through creating a balance between their rate of synthesis and degradation or regulating the intrinsic activity of the protein. Both these regulation mechanisms play an essential role in the normal functioning of cells. Protein degradation plays two important roles in the cells. It helps to protect cells from misfolded or damaged proteins before they lead to a...
