Global Warming

Global warming is the long-term increase in Earth’s average surface temperature, driven primarily by human activities that raise concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases absorb outgoing infrared radiation, strengthening the greenhouse effect and altering climate conditions. In biology, global warming affects organismal physiology, seasonal timing, species distributions, food webs, and ecosystem productivity, while increasing stress from heat, drought, and changing ocean conditions. Studying these responses helps researchers assess biodiversity loss, predict ecological change, and develop conservation strategies that support ecosystem resilience.

Global Climate Change

2019

Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past. Past Periods of Warming and Cooling In the last...

2013

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.

Gene microarrays are powerful tools in gene expression profiling at a genome-wide level. This technology has application in a variety of biological disciplines including developmental biology and toxicology. In this video, we detail a protocol for global gene expression analysis using a comprehensive oligonucleotide microarray platform for the zebrafish.

2-Vessel Occlusion/Hypotension: A Rat Model of Global Brain Ischemia

Bilateral carotid occlusion coupled with systemic hypotension produces global brain ischemia in the rat, resulting in damage to the hippocampus with reproducible severity. Animal subjects are impaired with predictable patterns of brain damage, they recover expediently, and mortality rates are comparatively low.
