Maximum Growth Rate

Maximum growth rate is the fastest rate at which a population, organism, cell, or biological system can increase in size or number under defined conditions. It is typically estimated during exponential growth, when resources are sufficient and the intrinsic rate of increase reflects the balance between reproduction, development, and survival. As nutrients, space, temperature, light, or other environmental factors become limiting, growth slows and may approach a carrying capacity. Measuring maximum growth rate helps researchers compare species, optimize microbial and cell cultures, model population dynamics, assess ecosystem responses, and evaluate how biological systems respond to changing conditions.

Determination of Michaelis Constant and Maximum Elimination Rate

2025

The Michaelis constant (KM) and the theoretical maximum process rate (Vmax) are vital parameters in the Michaelis-Menten equation, central to many biochemical reactions. They provide essential insights into enzyme kinetics and drug metabolism. These parameters can be estimated by analyzing plasma concentration data post-drug administration. A notable example of this application is phenytoin, a drug with capacity-limited kinetics. It's recommended that phenytoin should be administered at two...

Maximum Deflection

When analyzing beams under unsymmetrical loads, such as a train moving on a bridge, it is crucial to accurately determine the points of maximum stress and deflection. The process involves identifying the maximum deflection of the beam, which may not always occur at its midpoint due to the uneven distribution of the load. The maximum deflection occurs at a specific point, known as point O, where the tangent to the deflection curve is horizontal. To find point O, the slope of the tangent at any...

Here we present two protocols, one for measuring the specific growth rate and the other for the cell-binding ability of rotavirus using the plaque assay and RT-qPCR. These protocols are available for confirming the differences in phenotypes between rotavirus strains.

Continuous Culture of Bacteria at Constant Density via Automated Growth Rate Estimation

Begin with a turbidostat, a device that maintains a constant cell density in culture. The device contains a vessel with a bacterial culture, which is continuously aerated by stirring and maintained at a constant temperature.A laser diode emits a light beam that is split into two paths. One path is directed to a reference sensor to monitor laser intensity fluctuations, while the other passes through the culture.Bacterial cells scatter and absorb light, decreasing the transmitted intensity, which...
