Intraoperative Ultrasound

Intraoperative ultrasound is a real-time imaging technique used during surgery to visualize internal anatomy, tumors, and surrounding structures when direct inspection is limited. A sterile ultrasound probe sends high-frequency sound waves into tissue and converts returning echoes into images, while Doppler methods can assess blood flow; surgeons may adjust the probe during an operation to track tissue changes and lesion boundaries. In cancer research and care, this guidance supports tumor localization, biopsy targeting, assessment of resection margins, and detection of residual disease. Its immediate, radiation-free feedback can improve surgical decision-making and inform studies of tumor structure and treatment response.
